Ive only done it to my brother, not been on the receiving end though.
When you are young and used to rough play with an older brother and he is sleeping on a mattress on the floor and you are told to wake him up... A jump and two shins rather than a knee but the same idea.

Trust me, you don't. the "CRACK" sound is not overkill. the pain feels like your spine has snapped.
long story short. big family, small house, sharing room with little brother who got the top bunk and Christmas morning.
need i say more?
